The first Millennial elected to the State Assembly, Majority Leader Ian Calderon, who lives in and serves Whittier, made a surprise announcement on Tuesday, November 26, that he would not seek re-election for AD 57 in 2020.

Within 24 hours of the announcement, five candidates had declared for Calderon’s seat, including Whittier City Council members Josue Alvarado and Henry Bouchot. Whittier educators Justin Valero and Jessica Martinez (who lost to Calderon in 2018) also registered to seek election for AD 57 on March 3.
