Everyone has a story to tell: historic events you have observed, parenting practices in your childhood or with your own children, fashions of other years, home appliances, professional practices, what your generation did for fun–the list is endless.
In 1992, Carl Nelson, a member of First Friends Church, attended an Elderhostel taught by Lois Daniel, author of How to Write Your Own Life Story. Carl came back eager to share what he’d learned by teaching a class for twelve weeks, open to Friends and to the community.
The people who joined would not let it end, and Carl continued to teach it until his death in 2005. Bill Wright picked up the responsibility and continued to run the class until his death in 2013. Today, I convene the class, which meets Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall at First Friends, corner of Philadelphia Street and Washington Avenue. The class has now continued for twenty-seven years!
Daniel’s book is still used for reference, as are others in the field. The class now includes the daughter of one of the first members, who this year has been organizing her mother’s precious writings!
The group meets to share and appreciate stories. One person’s story may trigger memories that lead to more stories. Think how you would love to have stories written by your grandparents or other relatives who have gone before you; your heirs will one day treasure yours.
The class is not limited to experienced or trained writers. We all grow with listening to others and practice writing our own stories.
The class publishes a book every two years, giving members an opportunity to see their work in print and share it with others. You will also learn how to publish your own memoirs. It is surprising how fast the stories add up when you write every week.
Everyone is welcome. No charge is made, though an opportunity to donate in appreciation to the church is offered twice a year.
