Quemetco Violations Score Update
Quemetco Battery Recycling in the City of Industry has been found in violation of hazardous waste regulations for three decades. The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) will provide an update on Quemetco’s violations at this community meeting hosted by Clean Air Coalition of North Whittier & Avocado Heights.
The facility, operated by Quemetco, Inc., recycles lead‐acid batteries which involves smelting lead metal. The facility has
been in operation since 1959. The facility operates under several different permits and regulations including:
- Air ‐ overseen by the South Coast Air Quality Management District
- Water ‐ the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Los Angeles County Sanitation District
- Hazardous Waste ‐ overseen by the Department of Toxic Substances Control and the U.S. Environmental
Previous environmental evaluations that began in the 1990’s found that some areas around the facility had levels of lead in
soil exceeding government standards. Quemetco remediated many of these areas; however, additional sampling and
evaluations are needed to determine if more clean‐up is necessary.
